Silent Things - Laura Brownlie

Silent Things- Representation

Establishing LS
The first shot in Silent Things is an ELS of two people alone on a beach, this could suggest that the disability present in this film makes the individual feel alone isolated.

The unusual use of hand gestures by the girl is a very stereotypical representation of people with a mental disability. It also show her insecurity making her look very child like.

Once the other girl has lied to the other people on the beach about being his girlfriend to get them to leave him alone, He asked her why she lied to them. This innocent suggest that he is very naive and doesn't understand a lot of social things. When she is  talking to him he is totally focused of the kite and hardly looks at her once in their conversation, again showing that doesn't understand how to interact with other people.

When the other girl comes over to their conversation she doesn't even acknowledge the girl he's talking with. from what she says it is clear that she doesn't want anything to change and is comfortable with the way it is. The girl without the disability says to them "I am still here you know!" this clearly show that she doesn't understand much about their disability.  This is shown again when she is alone with the boy and tells him that he's 'funny' showing that when it come to his disability she is naive like he is with social situations.

Once they are on the ferry the sound starts to blur this show that he is very uncomfortable with whats going on. The officals on the boat do not know about his disabiltiy which only makes things worse when trying to calm him down. Maybe the director is trying to show able people need to know what to do in these situations.

At the end we see the girl and the boy fixing their kite again showing they are happy and comfortable with their own routine acting like nothing has happened.

  1. This is a start. Again, think about your presentation and structuring.

If you research into the film, you will see that it is about a boy with Aspergers. Look this up and see what the condition is and that will help you understand why they have made the film in the way that they have - they are trying to give us an insight into their world.
